Barbara,
What version of Informix OnLine are you using?
What sort of errors or messages are you seeing in the "OnLine message log"
file? The name of this file is defined by the MSGPATH parameter of the
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/tbconfig (or onconfig) file and is usually
$INFORMIXDIR/online.log.
What sort of errors or messages are being reported in the window where your
dbimport is being run (when the dbimport is dying)?
Chances are that you are either running out of chunck space, spanning all
of you configured logical log files, or running out of locks.
Somewhere around the 5.05 release of Informix OnLine, they changed the locking
stratagy of dbimport from "exclusive lock" to either "row level lock" or maybe
"page level lock". You may need to configure a very large number of locks
(256,000 max) depending upon the number of rows be loaded.
As for the calculation of extent sizes, I have found that the size of a
table's unload file (tablenameNNNN.unl) (in bytes) devided by one quarter
of the page size (in bytes) provides a good initial extent size in most cases.
Of course the true number of extents is dependent on the table's row size,
number (and type) of indexes, and OnLine Engine page size, plus a few more
things which I have probably forgotten.
