Did it work for you?

That depends on the job. I use the eclipse to write and integrate with
source
control system. I copy&paste the code to ServerStudio to test it, and I
also
have a tty open to run dbaccess, since some things (such as partition
names)
are not showing in ServerStudio, and I really hate doing a query to
systables
(or worse - to sysmaster) just to get some information (although
sometimes
I have to do that as well, since running oncheck is sometimes
overkill).
and now, for my meeting with John Graham, the coordinator for the
Eclipse DTP:
1) DTP is trying to grow a community of users (and developers). There
are
hundreds of direct users and tens of thousands (if not more) of
indirect
users: people who use Eclipse tools which use DTP (especially BIRT
-
the business reporting tool).
2) As part of the community building process, Eclipse DTP is happy to
welcome
all new users and their comments, bug reports, suggestions and
efforts to build
a better system, which will be available to all.
3) Eclipse DTP's current mission is a to build a *platform*, not a
tool. What we
see is more of a feasability demonstration than a real tool. John
wishes it would
be different, but with "a handful of part time committers" (i.e.
developers), much
cannot be accomplished. Sybase, Actuate and IBM, who are supplying
the
manpower, are intending it to be the basis for their future tools,
and do not wish
to invest too much in functionality that will not bring them direct
commercial value -
or worse, cannibalize sales of products based on this framework. He
hopes that
with growing community involvement (i.e. more volunteers or
companies working
with this platform) it can develop much further.
4) The IBM personnel who are developing DTP are NOT from db2 or
Informix, and
therefore, it is difficult for them to tailor it to these specific
databases. (Same for
the Sybase side). Moreover, since they are building a platform,
they do not have
the luxury to spend time to do the adaptations.
5) If we want IBM to help bring DTP to be Informix-aware and a really
useful tool,
we either need to do it ourselves or (better) ask IBM (probably via
IIUG)
to allocate some Informix personnel to the job. John estimates that
an
Informix person, fluent in Eclipse and allocating half of his time
to this
project, will be able to do that until the next release, scheduled
for June.
