7.3 ISM not mounting tape device

We have recently upgraded to 7.30.UC2 IDS and have been trying to get the ISM to work so we can use onbar. We have been able to get it to work using a disk device but unable to get it to even mount the tape devices. Tech support is stumpped on this one but they have been working hard at it. the error message we get is 'nsrmm: error, tape label read, I/O error' This comes from the ism_op -mount command. Our platform is SCO 5.04 and we have been trying this with a 4mm dat drive and a 20/40GB dlt. Anyone one out there experienced this problem or have any suggestions that might help?
