Re: SE 5.0 TO OnLine 7.3 Conversion
Posted in 1998
We have done this on SCO Unix 3.2.4.2 and have later upgraded to 5.0.x running both SE and IDS (OnLine). When we did the upgrade from SE 5.x to OnLine 7.1x a long time ago at a customer site we found that sume functions where faster under SE than OnLine. Overall OnLine where substantially faster though, and particularly the support of multiple OLTP type users with simultaneous execution of batch updates and reporting where substantially better. From SE 5.x to the latest IDS (and SE) versions the optimizer have become very much better. It does however require some work on optimaziation. Update statistics (with all it's new functionality) is key to this. With Art's dostats utility (available in util2_ak library at http://www.iiug.org under software) the problem we had with this dissapeared. You also have to do a number of other tuning chores, but they are not to hard. Many are well described in the administration manuals. These have to be read from first to last page. Many others you'll easily find out of by following c.d.i. If there is anything left at all you allways have the option of a course from Informix. IDS also normally require more resources than SE so you may need to upgrade memory and make sure your CPU(s) are fast enough.
