Who can help ?
Posted in 2004
A user accidentally deleted ~300,000 rows from an OLTP table via a purge job run with wrong parameters and asked whether the data could be recovered from the logical logs (no backup existed, and IBM support offered no help). Jack Parker said a restore from a level-0 backup is normally the easiest route; failing that, you can replay logs with onlog and parse the output (tedious, reportedly weeks of work), or dump the table's raw pages and extract rows still present but flagged deleted — so the table must be kept out of use immediately. He pointed to Art Kagel's utilities at iiug.org/software/archive/utils_ak and suggested hiring him. Another poster simply asserted recovery from logical logs is possible. No confirmed outcome is recorded in the thread.

Hello all, One of our employees deleted 300,000 fresh data from our OLTP database. (It was a purge process which got activated with the wrong parameters and it kept deleting fresh/new transactions). Is there any way I could get this data back from the logical logs ? If so how ? (IBM tech support is no help in this issue) Thanks. Ravi. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Sigh. Always a fun one. Should be in the FAQ.
Restore from backup is going to be your easiest route.
You can use onlog to play back the logs and parse them, however the data you
will find therein is not going to be organized neatly and the last time I
ran into someone who tried this, it took him weeks.
You can also dump the pages the table was on and (if no inserts or updates
which required a rewrite have occured) you will find the data as it is
supposed to be in the table, but with a delete flag lit up. So you would
have to parse the data out of the table in question.
Now as to specifics, hmmm - hang on a bit and I'll go try a few things. But
for right now, take the table out of circulation so that option two may
still be an option.
cheers
