Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Kurt saw 'update statistics for table ...' statements being issued against a large (8M row) table by a VB application, even though the app never codes them, and wanted to know where they came from (ODBC?). Alexandre suggested a temp table, or the dbscheduler/Automatic Update Statistics (AUS) tasks in 11.50/11.70. Dave Griffen recalled hitting this years ago and stopping it by turning off the ODBC driver's 'Auto Commit Optimization', suggesting a CSDK upgrade. Kurt found disabling that option broke another application, so no confirmed fix is recorded; he considered a newer CSDK.

Hello,
I noticed that sometimes an 'update statistics for table ...' is launched by a
certain VB application, although in the application itself it's not programmed!
Any idea where this might come from: ODBC setting,...?
Thanks in advance!
Hello, maybe your application is creating some temporary table, and
after some big processing (eg: load data)
it is running an update statistics on it?
Check that table and see if it´s a temporary one....
Regards.

Hello Alexendre,
Thanks for your quick response.
No, it's not on a temporary table. It's an existing, rather big table (more
than 8 million records) which is only used for selections...
Ok if it´s really a big static table (data is not changing), you could
safely remove your update statistics from the application.
(supposing your doing it on a schedulle basis, like AUS or even dostats).
Regards.

But that was my question: the 'update statistics' command is NOT programmed in
the application, it must be generated somewhere automatically but I don't know
where!!
Sorry, you didn´t mentioned your engine version.
Did you check your dbscheduller?
If it´s a panther release (11.70), or even a 11.50, you should check
your AUS settings, maybe it´s running from there,
since your already checked and it´s not an application problem.
(I mentioned 11.70 because of the new parameters for AUS Evaluator Task).
Hope it helps, ok?
Regards.

Response:
I ran into this problem several years ago. I recall the problem stopping when
I turned off Auto Commit Optimization in ODBC. Although, we currently use that
setting today without issue. So, I'm not certain if it was a problem with a
specific driver version. In any case, it is probably worth trying out in your
case. And if your on an old version of CSDK you may want to upgrade.
Good Luck
Dave Griffen
Hello Dave,
I thought it could be something like that.
But unchecking the option 'Auto Commit Optimization' gives other problems on
another application.
Maybe we should try a newer version of CSDK...
Thanks anyway.
