There is/was Informix 4GL for Windows V 4.x, but is unsupported now, and Informix will not sell it any more. Under 3.x you can use it with I-Net 4.1 or local SE 4.1. Under 95, SE 4.1 will not work because of incompatible dos/16m.386 memory manager, and I-Net 4.1 will still work , with "FTP Software" OnNet 2.x for TCP/IP. I am still investigating possibility of using it with I-Net 5.x and/or local SE 6.x. According to documentation of I-Net 5.x this is supported, and should work, but I can not make it work, and do not know anyone who has done that. This means that I am unable to say if you can use 4GL for Windows under W95 with local engine. You are obviously trying to use V 2.x.x. for DOS, which is using VCPI for memory access in protected mode, and because of that you can forget it. I remember some time ago that our Nils wrote that he can use non protected mode engine and tools (startsql instead of pstartsq, and fglgo instead of pfglgo under Windows, but as I understand this, it will limit You to 640K. Deal All, Am I really a stupid person for wasting my time trying to make this work? There was some big words in C.D.I. about how Informix should support low-end market for database engines. Right now, there is big fuss about port to Linux. How do anyone expect to support low-end database market with only low-end, or workgroup engines, without also supporting low-end tolls and clients? I can not forget how many times they told me that Cobol is dead. Clipper is dead. Basic is dead. R`n`r is dead. How many of you think that NewEra is low-end toll? That migrating 4GL to NE is "reasonable migration path" for low (or middle) end market? I see custom made 4GL code all around, and people trying to use it under windows. If they are forced to migrate it to NE, what do you think that are the chances for small to medium user to find NE expert to do this? Money aside, just to find somebody? Of course, they will find Access/PB/xx guy to do the re-write, witch is almost the same thing in my experience to "migrate" to NE. But then, there is no need for Informix engine any more. Will small to medium size customer appreciate Universal Server extravaganza to the point that he will buy low/middle end engine just because Informix is the leader? Leader to whom? To us, tech guys, but to them, leader is *racle, anyway. Is Informix satisfied with there sales? How many did you say that sale of client tools dropped? #include<std.disclaimer.h> **************************************************************** * Andrej Falout, RDBMS R&D, Croatia, Europe, afalout@zg.tel.hr * *--------------------------------------------------------------* * If you can read, You can do it ! * ****************************************************************
