Re: How much hardware to buy?

We were running a 5.02 database (11GB) on a RS/6000 Model 580 (1 CPU) and moved it over to a Model R40 (4 CPU's, 512MB) and converted up to 5.08 (soon to 5.10, then to 7.3 in the future). We also run batch jobs in the evenings, with very little OLTP during the day. We are consistently getting a 35% *decrease* in the time it takes to run our reports. And, by the way, we're also running another set of DB's under 7.23 on the same box! My only recommendation for the new machine would be 1GB of RAM, mirrored or RAID disk farm. Also, take advantage of every 'goody' that version 7.x offers (fragmentation, detached indexes, transactions, etc.) Hope this helps...my e-mail is: blackerh@jcdc.jobcorps.org ----------------------------------------------- Herb Blacker Cimarron, Inc.
