We are are planning to upgrade our informix IDS version 7.3 to IDS 10. As we have 3 computers installed with IDS 7.3, we try to do the upgrade on 3 different weekends. Some of our applications need to get data from databases on different computers. Will we have problems to retrieve data from the different IDS versions? Has anybody done this before? Regards, W.
In general the only problem you will see is if a session attached to a 7.xx server is trying to retrieve data from an IDS 10.00 instance that includes datatypes the 7.xx does not support. Art S. If you use synonyms between the different databases you can run into problems. At least some older IDS 7.3x versions don't support synonyms to IDS 9.x databases. If you have synonyms: Try to create synonyms between your IDS7 and new IDS9 (test) instance. If you have problems creating/using the synonyms: Try to fiind an upgrade order that you have only synonyms from IDS 9.x to IDS 7.x. How are you applications obtaining the data, do any users/dbas run queries
using dbaccess/isql There is a known bug where certain queries run from
9.4 and accessing 9.4 and 7.31 run OK thru' dbaccess, but will freeze and
eventually crash the 9 engine is run thru' isql. (Just been bit !!). You
will also see many log entries on the 7 side concerning PAM errors (You can
ignore them).
As others have said test, test, test and then test again.
