dbexport limits

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there is a limit to the size of, or the number rows
that can be exported using dbexport? I can't create a file larger than 2
gig using dbexport. I checked the OS (hp-ux 10.20) and I can write large
files. I'm running On-Line 7.23.
Thanks,

Hi,
I don't know the Informix port for HP. But most probably the version you have
is not compiled for supporting "large files". Traditionally, off_t is a 4
byte integer with positive value (-1 reserved for errors) and such allowing
file sizes up to 2 GB regardless the possibilities of the operating system's
file system. For "Large File Systems" off_t has been enlarged (on some
systems) to an 8 byte integer. But the application (Indformix) must use this
during compilation.
You could ask Informix if they have versions supporting files larger than 2
GB. If not, probably the only way to export your database would be an export
onto tape where there is no limit about the file size.

No guarantees whatsoever.

Dbexport, in export to a directory structure mode, will not create any
export files larger than 2GB, that is true. You must use it in
write-to-tape mode, and make the tape device a file or even a pipe. This
will not permit you to reload the files individually using dbload but you
will be able to use dbimport to reload the extract in series.

Hello Jerry,
dbexport has a limit of a 2 gig tape or file size. You will have to
supply multiple tapes, or do some juggling with the file name (i.e. once
the first 2 gig file is created, copy it off, press return to continue
and dbexport will overwrite the first file and continue on).
Informix has some type of feature request on file to remove this
limitation, but I'm not counting on seeing it anytime soon.
Have fun ....
