g>IMHO, DBMSs are commodity products. Vendors would heartily disagree with >this statement. The Big 3 (Informix, Oracle, Sybase) have similar features, (ANSI SQL, Stored Procedures, Triggers, etc.) but at their core, the database engines are designed VERY differently. This isn't vendor hype; it is a fact. It can also be the difference between a failed project and a successful one, especially with large databases and large numbers of users. Pickup trucks, Porsches, and Lincoln Continentals all have four wheels and a steering wheel. However, as fast as a Porsche may be, it's pretty useless for hauling large quantities of materials. Unfortunately, with a database engine, you may not know it can't do the job until it is very late in the project. Ask each vendor for a detailed engine architecture document or presentation, and you will see what I mean. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Randall Rhea Systems Engineer Informix Software randall@informix.com
