Performance Problem

I am running IDS version 7.24 UC6-1 on a dual processor RS/6000 (AIX 4.2)
with 512M of memory, the only thing running on the system is Informix. The
problem I have is that the performance seems to be extremely slow. I have a
an overnight process that takes many hours to run (5 hours) but when I run
statistics on AIX it is showing that the machine is spending most of its
time idle, in addition there is very little disk activity, and there are no
bottle necks on the system. I have checked and rechecked with the help of
external consultants the general tuning of the database and so far no one
has a clue what is going on.
It was even suggested that I check for sleep statements inside the 4gl -
obviously there arn't any ! There are no loops in the 4gl code and
everything is being accessed via indexes. What's going on ?
Is there any way of giving Informix greater priority on the processors ? I
have used the 'renice' command to change the priority (changed to highest
priority -20) of the oninit processes which has made very little difference.
I am still getting an average processor idle time of 70%.
If anyone out there has any ideas (or ways of finding out) what might be
happening on the system then please let me know !
Kind
Regards
Callum

Please send us some of your Informix statistics and configuration.
And as always, check your update statatistics. If the machine is
showing idle, then the processors might just be waiting for something
to process.

Let the task run for 1/2 hours then do
onstat -z wait 10 minutes and then do
onstat -g seg
onstat -g ath
onstat -p
onstat -d
onstat -g ioq
onstat -g sch
onstat -g glo
onstat -g sql <session id>
sar -u 1 1
sar -d 1 1
sar -p 1 1
sar -r 1 1
and send us the output...

This is typical behaviour of a client and a server communicating over a slow
network. Is your 4GL code running on the server? If yes, are you using
shared memory?
