Informix Rollbacks: Prevention Suggestions

We run Informix On-Line 5.00 (10 GB Tblspace) on an IBM/RS6000 980 (AIX) and I have noticed that when view the output from tbstat -p that the 'rollbk' was 418000! This six days into the last Informix bounce. My question is how to reduce the number of rollbacks. Would adding the statement 'set lock mode to wait' help when added within our source code? If it does, would the wait period be set to 15 or more seconds?
