raw disk to cooked files

Due to some reasons our sysadmin is forcing us to use cooked files on one of our training box. Since performance is not critical, I am ok with it. However I find the performance quite disappointing, close to unacceptable. What should I do to tune? I did not do any change in the onconfig. All I did was to change the link from raw disk to cooked file. I think I have to increase NUMAIOVPS, which is beneficial for cooked filed. The value is set to 18. Anything else I need to change? Thanks. Ravi
Hi, hmm. It can happen that there's a performance loss for such a change, but usually it is not "unacceptable" ... a) Changing NUMAIOVPS is the first step, and it's correct to increase it. Or leave it blank and the server will calculate a default value based on the number of devices in use ... b) Is it possible that the system is Linux ? If so, then check that the chunks are NOT on Reiser File Systems. For some reason there are Linux Versions/Distributions where the ReiserFS is very badly performing for IDS (otherwise it's OK, but with IDS it really slumps ...). If that's the case, then change to a different FS type, e.g. Ext2.
