Good day fellow Informix users, I am planning to perform a proof of concept to migrate an IDS 10.5 (AIX 5.3) installation to an IDs 12.2 Linux x86 (probably SLES 64-bit). Does anyone in this wonderful Informix universe have any suggested readings and/or experience that he/she can share with me as I am getting ready to setup my new test VM and Informix environment. What I am sort of looking for are any hints (DOs and DONTs) wither specific to the O/S, to the type of disk space/filesystem to use and/or any other serious setbacks that I could avoid using someone elses wisdom who would have done a similar migration before (whether it be from AIX to Linux or from any other O/S to Linux). The database that I am looking at migration has essentially up to 30 dbspaces/extents with approx. 200Gb data within it. Looking forward to hearing back from any of folks. Thanks in advance for your valuable knowledge, skills, expertise and generosity. One definite "don't" is this: Don't set up your dbspaces on a journaled file system. Use raw space if you can, otherwise (if memory serves) you probably want to use the EXT3 file system with journaling turned off. As always avoid RAID 5 if you possibly can. --EEM > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > Daniel Dansereau > Sent: Monday, February 08, 2016 15:46 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: Migrating IDS 10.5 on AIX to IDS 12.2 on Linux.... Daniel:
- I agree, avoid journaled filesystems, especially the ones on Linux.
- Make decisions about page sizes. Your default on AIX was 4K but on
Linux it is 2K so whether you use default pages on the new server or 4K
pages may affect performance and may limit table size growth (re: the 2^24
page count limit).
- Figure out how many objects (tables, indexes, partitions of same)
there will be in each dbspace and use the -ef and -en options to onspaces
(or the equivalent SQL API command options) to size the partition header
page table at the time the dbspace is created to minimize fragmentation of
the tablespace tablespace over time.
- Use FILLFACTOR actively to properly configure newly created indexes to
avoid unnecessary node splitting.
- Take advantage of MAX_FILL_DATA_PAGES to minimize wasted space within
tables that have variable length columns (VARCHAR, LVARCHAR, etc.).
- Research the various migration methods and pick one that makes sense
to you:
- Export/import using
- UNLOAD/LOAD or dbload
- dbexport/dbimport
- myexport/myimport using
- sqlcmd
- HPLoader
- External Tables
- HPLoader
- Direct data copy using SQL tools to the new server
- Enterprise Replication
Only Enterprise Replication will let you easily perform the migration prior
to server cutover and maintain both servers in sync both before and after
cutover (in case you have to fall back to the old server shortly after
cutover). However, setting up ER between a very old version like 10.00 and
v12.10 can be tricky.
