IDS debugging doc?

Hi everyone. I know of course that Informix db debugging is really different from debugging other databases in that it takes time and experience with the product along with logical debugging methods. That said does anyone know of any doc, articles, web sites, books that deal specifically with any kind of methods/how-to's/steps in a general way for debugging Informix IDS (or other versions of Informix)? Thanks

Hi Art. Thanks for responding. I guess my question was too open-ended and vague. I apologize for that. I meant typical server issues specifically, and server errors in particular, not really performance. Perhaps I should have not posted this question. Thanks, Will
Hi, You'll have to be more specific as to what you mean by "debugging". Are you talking about tuning the DBMS or database design for optimal performance? Or are you talking about debugging stored procedures written in Java? Or are you talking about something else? The techniques for each of those are very different from one another. In general, a good place to begin might be the Performance Guide in the manual set: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/ After that, try the IDS zone in DeveloperWorks: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/products/informix/index.html. After that, look into the IBM redbooks: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/ After that look for books on Informix at Barnes and Noble, Amazone, etc. And finally, a question about your question: You seem to imply that debugging other DBMS products is relatively standard and can be done without having much knowledge of the product. Is that correct? If so, can you provide an example? Interesting discussion, this. ;-)
And I always thought "debugging" was an
activity that you perform in order to find and
remove (software) bugs.
So far when debugging I usually used
- aehm, well - a debugger. Therefore I
thought that debugging IDS is quite easy:
Use a debugger as user "root" and attach
it to a running "oninit" process. Then use
general debugger commands (see
the documentation of your favourite
debugger that you are using).
Over the holidays I will think about all
these new methods and possibilities
of "debugging" IDS ... ;-)
[ In the past I may have wrongly called
them "monitoring", "profiling" or perhaps
"tracing", "tuning", ... ;) ]
Cheers, :)
Martin
