What does this error mean?

Reported as Error 40002: S1000: [INTERSOLV][ODBC Informix driver][Informix]IS [NOT] NULL predicate may be used only with simple columns. Bear in mind I am not using sql , I have opened an rdo result set select * from table where a = b and when i do an rs.update, it sometimes returns this error!!!!???? Help!! thanks Simon
