That solution only reduces the number of locks used. It will not reduce the amount of updates written to the transaction logs. I do not know of any other method of updating a very large table, other than: - adding more logs or - changing the database to no logging before the update. I usually use the latter, as I don't normally have the luxury of enough space to add enough logs (sigh)...
