onbar: imported restore, point in time?
Posted in 2014
A user tried to restore an old (May 2014) ON-Bar/TSM backup of an IDS 10 server onto a second instance (copying ixbar, oncfg and onconfig files, renumbering SERVERNUM, granting TSM access). A plain 'onbar -r' worked but only to the latest backup; point-in-time attempts ('onbar -r -p -t ...') always returned "There are no storage spaces/logical logs to backup/restore". Art Kagel pointed out the ixbar file showed no storage-space backup before 29 June 2014 (only log backups), so the requested PIT was impossible, and suggested dropping -p and possibly rebuilding ixbar to use older TSM objects. A later attempt at 29 June still failed with "Backup object does not exist in Storage Manager"; no confirmed resolution is recorded.

Hi all.
I need restore an old backup of my production servers. Let's talk about two
servers:
- INFORMIXSERVER=idsold, SERVERNUM=10
- INFORMIXSERVER=idsnew, SERVERNUM=20
Both running identical O.S. and IDS releases. Copied these files from idsold
to idsnew:
- ixbar.10 to ixbar.20
- oncfg_idsold.10 to oncfg.idsnew.20
- onconfig.ifxold to onconfig.ifxnew.
Changed environment variables INFORMIXSERVER to idsnew and ONCONFIG to
oncofig.ifxnew. Changed onconfig.ifxnew values: SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME and
DBSERVERALIASES.
Granted permissions in TSM: dsmc set access backup "/ifxold/ifxold/*/*" ifxnew.
I've tried "onbar -b -p -t '2014-05-11 00:00:00'", "onbar -r -t '2014-05-11
00:00:00'", and answer is always: "There are no storage spaces/logical logs to
backup/restore."
At last, restored ifxold to ifxnew: onbar -r. But it restores to last ifxold
backup, and I need a backup (not expired) from may-2014. Then I've tried
"onbar -r -t...." on just restored server but doesn't work.
Any idea about make imported restore at point in time? Thanks in advance.

Hi Art. Thanks for answer. No I didn't, because it's an unsupported version (IDS 10.00). It's one of our older servers, we have migrated most of databases to IDS 11.70 (with active support) and deleted them, but now we need recover a group of original DDBB from backup. I trusted on IDS+TSM backups and made no more copies, but now I can't recover theese databases. Greetings. Rafael Gómez
I'm not sure about the problem... and I don't understand why you tried to
backup (onbar -b...).
But if an "onbar -r" works, you can't you simply edit the ixbar file and
live just up to the one you want? Unless of course you really need a very
specific point in time...

Hi Fernando.
Sorry my mistake, I wrote
I've tried "onbar -b -p -t '2014-05-11 00:00:00'", "onbar -r -t '2014-05-11

When I really should have written:
I've tried "onbar -r -p -t '2014-05-11 00:00:00'", "onbar -r -t '2014-05-11

Typo mistake.

I've tried to an exact point in time of ixbar file, "onbar -r -p -t

restore will not be attempted.
2014-11-03 12:43:21 20493 20491 /opt/informix/bin/onbar_d complete, returning

I dont't care about error -43140, it raises because no physical restore has
been made and so, can't make logical restore.
Regards.

Unless I'm misreading the ixbar file, there is not backup recorded there as
being available prior to May 15, 2014 so you cannot do a point-in-time
restore dated May 11, 2014!

Hi Art.
Thanks for your answer. You're right, reading whole ixbar file I can see there

2014-11-07 11:06:23 15141 15139 There are no storage spaces/logical logs to
backup/restore.
2014-11-07 11:06:28 15141 15139 (-43140) Due to the previous error, logical
restore will not be attempted.
2014-11-07 11:06:28 15141 15139 /opt/informix/bin/onbar_d complete, returning
147 (0x93)
When I try with -t '2014-06-30 00:00:00', to get last backup from previous
day, I got same error.
On the other side, as backups previous to this date are still in TSM, could I
get it from TSM and asimilate in IDS?
Greetings.
Your command line: onbar -r -p -t '2014-06-29 13:00:06 is specifying a
point-in-time (or PIT) restore with the -p or physical restore flag
included. Try a full restore without the -p.
As to recovering another backup from TSM that is not recorded in the ixbar
file, you should be able to do that, I'm not sure how. Have you tried
rebuilding the ixbar file?
