SQL Explain from a client?

Is there any way to access an explain from a client? As far as I know when Explain it turned on all the explains are interleaved for all queries in a file on the server. It seems that there is a way in 8.x to set the directory for where this file should be written on a per-session basis. Well what if the end user is accessing the database via JDBC or ODBC? How can I access the explain? It seems like a major problem... Sybase returns the explain text as a warning message so I can grab it on the client, Oracle is even better and I can pipe the explain into a table and just grab it... what can I do with Informix?
