CONSTRUCT in Chinese

Can anyone help us! We have a ICL super server running Unixware 2.x and Informix Online 7.x We allow users to input chinese double byte ("BIG 5 Code") data which informix seems to store and retrive without much problems in 4GL. However when chinese characters are type into a CONSTRUCT statement an error occurs. I think it is a -201 syntax error or something similar. I have displayed the constructed string and it seems fine. I have also used an INPUT statement and build my own string. This worked fine but an INPUT statement does not offer the flexibility of the CONSTRUCT especially with many fields. Is there a simple solution. At the moment our solution is to tell users that they cannot query in chinese
