Re: Eperiences with Online under NT 4

I may actually use NT for some purposes, but agree that Unix is better in most cases. The bigger the database gets the more advantages you have with Unix. Also connectivity to PC's is as easy with Unix as with NT. The only gripe I have with Unix are that the vendors only lately have realy started working on making administration simple. You still need too much Unix experitse and there aren't enough people to go arround with this expertise. The result may be that you end up with having to buy from one of the big companies who at least have been rather expensive (see below). There is still to much arroganse on the expert side among too many Unix people, and too little understanding for making things simple. Of course the problem with NT is that even though it may be simple at the outset you easily hit impregnable walls where you aren't able to make it work even with a lot of expertise. A Unix with a top notch administration GUI that was designed with simplisity in mind would have been ideal. These are on their way, but may still have some way to go. billy@west.co.za ("Billy Wheeler") wrote: :On 17 Feb 97 at 23:29, Chris Drauch wrote: : :> Take a real operating system, don't poke around with a *little* more :> stable desktop operating system. : :Amen. People say "well I can get up to 90% of the performance of UNIX :with the same config on NT and it costs a lot less". Wait until you :have to waste 40 man hours finding some piddly little fault. Pretty :soon you're way past the cost of rather buying UNIX. But NT doesn't cost a lot less. Unix on a PC is a very viable platform. The hardware then is the same price, and the OS (SCO Open Enterprice or Unixware or perhaps Solaris X86) isn't that much more expensive than NT. The problem people seem to have is whenever they talk about Unix they think of HP, Sun or some of the others which at least have sold overpriced hardware. Lately even they may have come down to sensible prices. :If you install it and it works first time, you're away and that's :great; but judging by the posts I've seen, if it goes wrong, chuck it :out and use UNIX.
