Q: ontape -a to /dev/null

Hi,
One on of our HP-UX 10.20 machines with Informix 7.30 UC7x8,
when TAPEDEV and LTAPEDEV are set to /dev/null, ontape -a
gives a message that it cannot backup logical logs to /dev/null.
Creating a link from null to null2 and setting *TAPEDEV to
null2 works. On our other (same config) machines, though,
null works fine. Any ideas ?

Indeed you can't use ontape to back up logs to /dev/null. I'm surprised
that it works on any other servers either; in fact I'd almost be prepared to
bet that it doesn't.
When LTAPEDEV is set to /dev/null logical logs are automatically marked as
free as soon as they fill (provided they don't contain checkpoint info).
However, setting LTAPEDEV to something that is itself a link to /dev/null
requires on ontape back-up to free logs up (even though the link means that
these will be discarded).
With TAPEDEV; set to /dev/null on ontape -s is more-or-less instantaneous,
but if set to something which is a link to /dev/null IDS will read every
page on the server before discarding it, which can take a significant amount
of time on a large server.
