Yes, because it's not supported by Informix (yet?) as Dave said.
If you run it from MS Access or otherwise through ODBC it will work.
It will then be automatically translated to the Informix syntax by
your ODBC driver.

Which is unfortunate but a result of Informix supporting outer joins
long before the ANSI standard had them.
An ODBC driver solves this however and give you at least the
performance of any native driver in most cases. Sometimes even better
performance.
