I would say that the parameters that affect checkpoint duration the most would
be the number of buffers you have and LRU_MIN_DIRTY and LRU_MAX_DIRTY
from the $ONCONFIG file. By having very low lru min and max dirty you will
force the dirty buffers to be flushed between checkpoints, not at checkpoints.
I'd increase you checkpoint interval and lower the min and max dirty
parameters.
I've seen some systems that had them set as low as 1 (for max dirty) and 0 (for
min dirty). You can onstat/tbstat -R to monitor your % of dirty buffers.
