IWA to connect to Informix on Solarix x86
Posted in 2012
Nitin wanted to use the Informix Warehouse Accelerator (IWA) with production servers on Solaris x86_64, and had tried installing IWA plus IDS 11.70 on CentOS, accessing the Solaris data via synonyms; he blamed the onsoctcp/ontlitcp difference. Responders explained TLI vs sockets was a red herring, that IWA (Linux-only) can connect directly to the source instance and doesn't need an intermediate IDS, that IWA can't pull data through synonyms, and that Solaris x86 as a source is only supported from 11.70.FC5 (on both IDS and IWA). Nitin, on FC4, planned to upgrade to FC5.

Hi, All of our Production servers are on Solaris x86_64 and I was looking to use IWA, so please let me know if thats possible? Is there a work around? I have installed IWA on Centos and also installed IDS 11.70 on Centos (VM) and created a Accelerator. But when I try to access my production servers from IDS on centos (I wanted to create synonyms of big tables of my prod env), it is failing probably due to different NETTYPE, linux uses onsoctcp while Solaris is using ontlitcp. regards, Nitin
I trust you understand the Warehouse Accelerator binary is completely = separate from the base Informix 11.7 binary, correct? You don't need to = have the source instance or the binary on the same machine or O/S as the = accelerator binary. You can have your source Informix 11.7 instance on 64 bit Solaris and = use the accelerator on a Linux host starting with the FC5 release of the = accelerator. Solaris is not supported as a source instance on the FC4 or = earlier releases. I would encourage you to read through the manual for the accelerator. In = doing so, you'll realize that there are no "regular" SQLHOSTS entries = you need to configure. The linkage between the source instance and an = accelerator uses a proprietary protocol that is generated when you = execute the ondwa getpin command then use the output to create an = accelerator. You can use the graphical tool or Java method to create the = accelerator. As part of this process, the proper SQLHOSTS entries will = be created and the accelerator will be linked to the source instance. If you are in North America, I would also encourage you to come to the = Summer Informix Roadshow. The first day of the roadshow is dedicated to = the warehouse accelerator with instruction and hands-on labs. TLI -vs- Sockets is not the problem, the underlying network protocols are identical, only the library interface that is used in the source code is different. That said, I don't know about Solaris for x86, but Solaris for Sparc can use either TLI or Sockets (Solaris is only platform that can) and performance is nearly identical. Check the release notes if you feel a need to test whether this is really a red herring. Note that if IWA is running on Linux it CAN access your production database on Solaris directly (IWA ONLY runs on Linux) you do not need a copy of IDS running on Linux to interface to IWA. Art Art S. Not sure if I understand the problem... IWA can work with IDS on Solaris x64 only on 11.70.FC5. That is correct. Solaris Sparc was supported from day one but Solaris = x86 was only supported from the FC5 release which came out a couple of = weeks ago. Ahh, so thats the problem. We are using IDS Version 11.70.FC4 on Solaris x86, probably we should upgrade to FC5 if we want to use IWA. Thanks for your responses. regards, Nitin
Thanks Art and Carlton for the replies. Frankly, this was the first time I was trying to use IWA (had lot of trouble installing and briging up) as I had not given much time to read about it and was depending heavily on a presntation on IWA setup by Scott Pickett (spickett@us.ibm.com). I will definitely give a try to attend this conference as I am a fan of Informix tech since last 12-13 years and now my organisation is looking to a product for WAREHOUSE and I have been trying to convince them for IWA instead of VERTICA (HP product)! Any help on this matter will be appreciated. regards, Nitin

The problem is: IWA CentOS ---> IDS CentOS --> IDS Solaris IDS tables on CentOS are synonyms of real IDS tables on Solaris. This doesn't works on IWA. IWA cannot get data from synonyms. This could be a great new feature, but doesn't works at the moment. You should connect IWA CentOS directly to IDS Solaris. Note that IDS on solaris should be a 11.70.XXX version
Thanks Vincent. Since my OS Solaris x86 is supported only after FC5, I am now downloading this version and install on dev box and see how best can I use it. regards, Nitin
