Informix JDBC Connection Fails to get BYTE data type

I am using Informix JDBC Driver to connect to Informix server 7.31. When I try to select a Binary Blob Field (BYTE Data type ) I get the following error. and the Informix server crashes!! I cannot imagine why the server should crash? Please let me know if any solution. Thank you.
