Help with disk space
Posted in 2007
A user running IDS 9.40 on Red Hat asked how to reclaim disk space: after purging data, the freed space stayed inside the chunks/dbspaces rather than being returned to the OS. Replies explained there is no command to shrink in place — deleted rows only free extents within the dbspace. To recover physical space you must drop/recreate the tables (unload first, or dbexport/drop database/dbimport, validating the export because dbexport can choke on odd characters), then drop the now-empty chunks or dbspaces; note a chunk is never fully empty since internal structures use some pages. No further follow-up from the poster is recorded.

Hello, this it is my first post. We have a IDs9.4 running in aRedhat Enterprise, a disc of 116 Gb, memory 8 Gb. The problem is thatthe space that I have left is of 115 Mb, we we purified data, butchunks is not drained logically bony estan empty, but they continueoccupying space in the disc. There is some command to release thespace occupied by chunks empty? Greetings, and thank you very much Roberto C. Guevara -- Desarrollo de Sistemas http://www.mcanet.com.ar
If you've gotten rid of all of the data, then drop and recreate the tables.
Otherwise you need to unload/drop/recreate them.
You could just dbexport/drop database / dbimport.

Keep in mind that a dbexport can sometimes have issues with certain
characters in data. So make sure to validate your export before dropping
the database or you may find yourself hunting for that tape backup you
were always meaning to do . . .

Mr Casuscelli,
Saludos,
Víctor
