Well, what's wrong with setting the LTAPEDEV to /dev/null?
This value is detected and treated specially, precisely so you do not have
to run ontape ever. All my systems run like that -- I don't have anything
of value in my databases.
If you can afford to lose all the transactions since the last archive, then
you do not need to back up the logical logs. In practice, few people can
afford that in a commercial environment, but where you can, exploit the
opportunity.
