Interaction between IFX_PAD_VARCHAR and IFX_TRIMTR
Posted in 2012
I do not understand how these two settings are supposed to interact (if at all). IFX_PAD_VARCHAR controls whether "trailing spaces are stripped" "to and from" VARCHAR columns. (page 2-13 of the Informix JDBC Programmer's Guide). Its default value is apparently 0, which I assume is "off", so presumably this means that VARCHARs are not padded by default. Does this in fact mean that trailing spaces are in fact stripped forcibly, or only that extra spaces will not be added? There's a big difference. IFX_TRIMTRAILINGSPACES just "removes trailing spaces". The documentation does not say from what sort of thing these spaces are removed. Its default value is apparently 1, which I presume means "on", so SOME trailing spaces on SOME text-like columns are trimmed (I'm assuming this). How do these settings interact? What if IFX_PAD_VARCHAR is set to 1 ("on"), and IFX_TRIMTRAILINGSPACES is set to 1 ("on")? I realize I can try this sort of thing, but I want to hear what the expected behavior is. Thanks for any information you can provide. Best, Laird -- http://about.me/lairdnelson --00248c7118154c198d04c6496a92
