The new word for such a database is "Data Warehouse". It can contain very detailed informations covering not only todays data but also all the history of the corporation (Some people think of Terabytes of data - Database vendors and hard disk manufacturers will be delighted). The most interesting thing in Data Warehousing is not to make only long running queries, but to have and use tools which analyse the data - find trends, say what would have been under modified circumstances and finally how are certain parameters to be changed to get some desired results- the so called OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP). The technology for such large databases is available, the development of appropriate tools is at the beginning. Look into the group comp.databases.olap. Good luck for Your Ph.
