Can you do SQL in a signal handler?

Is it really safe or advisable to do calls to Online in ESQL-C from within a signal handler? Some code I am reviewing calls ESQL-C routines on the receipt of a SIGCHLD when a process it has forked dies. This scares this shit out of me but maybe someone out there has done this and can tell me if it is safe or not? (The updating of tables is involved, not just reading them.) Mike.
