error -461

The delivered programs were built with static INFORMIX libraries. Everything works fine on the development machine (HPUX 10.20 A 9000/889). However, when delivered to some users (HPUX 10.20 A 9000/755), all programs built with ESQL/C report the INFORMIX error: -461. finderr 461 says: ======================= - -461 File open error. This statement transfers a value between a file and a BYTE or TEXT column. Since the locator structure field loc_loctype was set to LOCFNAME, the database server tried to open the file using the pathname in loc_fname and the flags in loc_oflags. An operating system error was returned. Check the accompanying ISAM error code for more information, and look for operating system messages. The error -461 is a spurious error which occurs almost exclusively, assuming you don't REALLY have corrupt BLOB files, when a compiled 4GL or ESQL program is run on a client or server that either does not have an ESQL/4GL runtime installed or the runtime is an earlier version. It happens because the message files that the app needs are not there or are missing critical messages so the message code cannot even find the message that says "I cannot find my messages" and prints whatever text is already in memory. For some unknown reason it is always the message for -461, has been for years. Solution: install an ESQL 9.20 (ie SDK 2.20) compatible runtime (iConnect 2.20 or later) on that machine. Art S.
