Informix Announces Support for IBM SMP PowerPC Servers Informix Parallel Data Query Technology To Be Maximized on New SMP Product UNIX EXPO, New York (October 4, 1994) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX) today announced its intent to support its relational database server products on IBM's new line of RISC System/6000 PowerPC servers, based on a symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) design and the PowerPC 601 microprocessor. The new IBM RS/6000 SMP servers will be particularly well suited to leverage the power of INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM), the company's multithreaded, parallel processing database server. With INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server and IBM's new SMP hardware architecture, customers will be able to take advantage of Informix's Parallel Data Query option (PDQ). PDQ maximizes SMP hardware architectures, by breaking long-running database queries into subtasks and then processing those tasks in parallel. This approach maximizes the power of each central processing unit (CPU) in a SMP system, thereby facilitating performance improvements ten to hundred times over serial database technology. "The RS/6000 SMP servers will extend IBM's performance and scalability many times over when combined with INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server," said Larry Cohn, vice president of product development, servers and connectivity products at Informix. "Our combined technologies will provide an easy migration path for customers to scale their applications from uniprocessors to symmetric multiprocessors without altering their application, and they will get maximum performance gains with our PDQ technology." Along with INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server, Informix will also make available on the new RS/6000 SMP servers, INFORMIX-SE, the company's database server for small- to medium-range database management environments. Both products are scheduled for availability in late fourth quarter of 1994. About Informix Informix Software is the leading supplier of high performance, parallel processing database technology for open systems. The company's database servers are the number one choice of computer hardware manufacturers for publishing Transaction Processing Council (TPC) benchmarks for UNIX-based systems. Informix products also include application development tools for creating client/server production applications, decision support systems, and ad-hoc query interfaces, and connectivity software that allows information to be shared transparently from PCs to mainframes within the corporate computing environment. Informix corporate headquarters is based in Menlo Park, California. ### All companies mentioned or other names indicated by (R) to (TM) are registered trademarks of their respective manufacturer. -- %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% William Daul Advanced Support INFORMIX SOFTWARE INC. 4100 Bohannon Dr. (415) 926-6488 - wk Menlo Park, CA. 94025 uunet!infmx!billd or billd@informix.com
