Decreasing Checkpoint Lengths.

What parameters have the greatest effect on checkpoint lengths? Currenly I have my checkpoint interval at 30 seconds, and a peak times checkpoints are still taking over 10 seconds. We're running multiple configurations on Workgroup Server. Some on WIN NT, Some on SCO, and some on HP/UX. All are having the same results.
