ontape -a "this tape contains no log data"
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 11.10.UC1 (Red Hat Linux) found that 'ontape -a' for logical log backups failed immediately with "This tape contains no log data", with nothing logged in online.log. He posted onstat -l/-m output and his settings (TAPEDEV /p1/copia/dat.000, LTAPEDEV apparently /p1/copia/log.000, TAPEBLK 32, LTAPESIZE 2000000). Suggestions: set TAPEDEV/LTAPEDEV to a directory rather than a file in version 11 (so no tape-mount prompt appears), and check that the LTAPEDEV file exists, is owned by informix with 660 permissions, and is empty — Art Kagel suspected ontape refused to overwrite a non-empty file containing non-log data, advising to zero or rename it, else call support. No confirmation from the poster is recorded.

What do you have LTAPEDEV and LTAPESIZE set to? Can you try the ontape -a
again and post the command session output and the output from onstat -m and

This is IDS version 11.
The first thing I see is your TAPEDEV setting.
TAPEDEV should be set to a directory instead of a file.
If that's your TAPEDEV setting, I'll assume that LTAPEDEV is set the same.
Try setting them both to directories and see what happens. You shouldn't
be getting the prompt to mount the tape.

Well, you didn't show LTAPEDEV, but I can guess that from the ontape -a
output:
LTAPEDEV /p1/copia/log.000
Does that file exist? Are its permissions 660 and owned by 'informix' and
group 'informix'? Is it empty? If not fix that and try again.
WAIT! I JUST FIGURED IT OUT! The file, /p1/copia/log.000, isn't empty and
it contains data or text which does not look like logical log records, so
ontape doesn't want to overwrite it in case you need the existing contents!
Zero out the file, or rename it and create a new empty file and try again.
If that's all OK, contact tech support.

Hi mr Kagel,
In truth the file is well, it has correct permissions and is empty
before the ontape -a. There was a process that it blocked to ontape -a, only
was to kill several sessions (onmode - z) of informix
user and the problem was solved.
Thanks for your help

My ideas :
- Try to change LTAPEDEV to other path , and run "ontape -a" again
- ps -ef |grep ontape (to find hanging process, then kill it)
- link that LTAPEDEV to /dev/null to make sure there's no file system problem
- did u try to restart IDS engine ?
Best Regards,
Jakkrit A.

Subject: RE: ontape -a "this tape contains no log data" [18339]
Hi mr Kagel,
In truth the file is well, it has correct permissions and is empty
before the ontape -a. There was a process that it blocked to ontape -a, only
was to kill several sessions (onmode - z) of informix
user and the problem was solved.
Thanks for your help
