Don't Know what version informix you have. however if you just want to
know how many tables you have in a databse you can also use:
select tabname, dirpath from systables
If you want more info on them just use : select * from systables
I'm inclined to think that this should get you want you want since the idea of a schema is called the table owner in Informix.
select distinct owner from systables where tabid > 99
