Oh you knew this was coming. Vapor wars have begun!

Yes sports fans, its that time of the year when Oracle pushes out some more marketing 'smoke and mirrors'. No, its not vaporware, because its not a software package. Instead its a vapor TPC-C benchmark and IBM bashing. Oracle on Sun vs. DB2 on AIX. You can read the article here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/10/oracle_sun_sparc_commitment/ Granted this is aimed at quelling any rumors about the future of Sun, but you have to admit the style of Leisure Suit Larry. Of course if IBM were smurt, like their Global Services minions claim to be, you would see them doing a TPC-C benchmark on IDS. But that assumes that IBM is/was serious when it had the 'go to market' message of IDS as their OLTP platform of choice. But hey! Serge is right. No one buys based on the TPC-C benchmark. Its just a good way to create marketing material. Let me say those magic two words again... *MARKETING MATERIAL*. You know, stuff you can say to your customers to woo them and get them interested in your product. Not something to base a purchase decision on, but rather a *TALKING POINT*. (Yet another bold sales term...) Of course, what is IBM's response? We don't know because their marketing folks are off somewhere in hiding pushing papers to look busy. After all, will most of IBM's operations moving to India or Brazil, who knows if the marketing folks will be next? ;-) But hey! What do I know? ;-) -G _________________________________________________________________ With Windows Live, you can organize, edit, and share your photos. http://www.windowslive.com/Desktop/PhotoGallery
You're just jealous because we made front page. I just love the "even DB2" bit. Such flattery :-) -- Serge Rielau SQL Architect DB2 for LUW IBM Toronto Lab

Such flattery :-) No, not the front page. If I wanted to poke fun of IBM I'd go on to say that Oracle is only vocalizing what IBM won't publicly say... that DB2 *is* the database as far as they're (IBM) is concerned. The truth is really less sinister. Oracle can't comment about IDS since IBM hasn't done a TPC-C benchmark using IDS. There's more to it, but I don't want to bore you. ;-) -G _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Keep your friends up to date with what you do online. http://windowslive.com/Campaign/SocialNetworking?ocid=PID23285::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-US:SI_SB_online:082009
