If two unix boxes A & B are connected via a TCP/IP network. } }B has the Informix database }A is running an Informix 4GL program with no database present on the box. } }On A, can the 4GL program access the data on B ? If so do we need extra }software on both boxes. A needs an I4GL runtime. With 4.1x I4GL and 5.0x servers, you'd need an I-Net runtime on A, and on B you'd need either OnLine and I-Star or SE and I-Net. Since you do development somewhere, you'll need development licences of I4GL and the server software on some machine. With 6.0x I4GL and 7.x servers, A would need a runtime OnLine or SE (I-Net and I-Star are bundled with the engines, not a separate product), or a Connectivity package if such a thing is available as a separate product (it may not be available until the 7.20 release), while B would need the relevant Engine. }2. If Oracle was on box A could it access data from the Informix database on }box B? Depends on what gateway technology you are using... Probably not, but ODBC or one of the vendor-independent database tools might do the trick. Yours, Jonathan Leffler (johnl@informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h>
