As you have stated, Informix technical was no help with this problem but after close investigation we were able to solve it. Remember one of the basic rules of indexing... don't place an index on a row containing only a few possible values. Example: sex (M or F), answer (Y or N) What we found is that the old optimiser was more forgiving with these type of indexes... our solution was to make a composite index using the sex field along with another field to provide more unique indexes.
