Informix Software Announces Availability of INFORMIX-Gateway with DRDA MENLO PARK, Calif. (March 16, 1993) Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ: IFMX) today introduced INFORMIX-Gateway with DRDA, becoming the first major UNIX database vendor to fully support IBM's Distributed Database Architecture (DRDA). Additionally, as part of today's announcement, Informix stated its commitment to support the distributed unit-of-work (DUOW) level of DRDA. The new Informix product was announced publicly today at IBM's Information Warehouse announcement in San Francisco. INFORMIX-Gateway with DRDA will be demonstrated this week at the Uniforum show, also held in San Francisco. Shipments of the new product are now scheduled to begin in June. Beta testing by some of Informix's key customers in the retail, telecommunications and financial industries is currently in progress. The first release of INFORMIX-Gateway will be UNIX-based and will allow interconnectivity to IBM's SAA databases. Informix users will be able to transparently access DB2 databases through the product. INFORMIX-Gateway is the only product that provides a UNIX-based solution without the need for users to purchase high-priced mainframe gateway products. "Today's DRDA product introduction is the first in a series of steps Informix is taking this year toward providing completely open tool suites for SQL-based relational database management systems," said Tim Shetler, vice president, product marketing, Informix Software. "Other planned introductions include products compatible with the ODBC and DAL data access standards." This capability allows applications built with Informix development tools such as INFORMIX-4GL, INFORMIX-SQL, and INFORMIX-ESQL to transparently access and modify information in DB2 databases as easily as Informix database information can be accessed today. "Our gateway allows direct access to DB2 from Informix tools without the overhead of expensive mainframe software translators. Companies working to rightsize mainframe applications will find IBM's DRDA and INFORMIX-Gateway to be important pieces of their solution," said Shetler. DRDA is IBM's published architecture that provides connectivity among Relational Database Management Systems that run in hetrogeneous environments. DRDA supports Structured Query Language (SQL) as the standardized interface that applications use to access disributed relational data and provides access to remote data with the security and integrity features required by sophisticated production database applications.
