IDS 7/9 on NT Network chunks

Folks, I'm trying to do something on IDS9.4 NT (NT4 and W2K) that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. I'm trying to create database chunks on network-attached drives. I'm getting erratic results. Using only NTFS filesystems I create the database file with mks "touch" and then try to onspace -a the file. Problem is, I keep getting "...file does not exist.." errors. I've experimented a bit. I have a "virgin" W2K machine to test on. >From my NT 4.0 Informix box, I tried to create a chunk on the virgin machine and get a "not found". Then I installed IDS9.4 on the virgin and tried the exact same process (using scripts so it's not fumble-fingering). If I've installed IDS on the target machine, the chunks create properly. Obviously, the NT install did something that Informix likes. So, my question is, what does the IDS install on NT do that makes it able to show chunkspace to another machine. I suspected permissions and ownership, and created an informix user on the virgin, to no avail. I suspect it has something to do with the Informix admin group on NT, but I'm not finding it. Any ideas? Thanks, Joe Lumbley
