Install Issue
Posted in 2013
On AIX 6.1, installing IDS 11.70.FC7 failed with "not enough disk space" in /tmp and /, even though df showed plenty of free space, and setting IATEMPDIR (and running via sudo) didn't help. Suggestions included checking symlinks on /opt, exporting TEMP/TMPDIR as well as IATEMPDIR (a known InstallAnywhere issue), using sudo -E to pass the environment, avoiding NFS-mounted temp dirs, and opening a PMR. Resolution: something cached in /tmp was consuming space not reflected by df; the sysadmin grew that filesystem and the install worked (a reboot likely would have done the same).

Good Morning Folks, O/S = AIX 6.1 IDS = 11.70.FC7 I have an install issue that should be a no brainer however... When I attempt an install, I am getting: WARNING! Please free up at least 439548 kilobytes in / and attempt this installation again. df -k Filesystem 1024-blocks Free %Used Iused %Iused Mounted on /dev/hd4 1048576 811884 23% 11357 6% / /dev/hd2 3145728 891016 72% 45451 19% /usr /dev/hd9var 1048576 660680 37% 8537 6% /var /dev/hd3 1048576 701520 34% 224 1% /tmp /dev/hd1 32768 30992 6% 140 2% /home /dev/hd11admin 131072 130692 1% 5 1% /admin /proc - - - - - /proc /dev/hd10opt 2097152 1650572 22% 15289 4% /opt /dev/livedump 262144 261776 1% 4 1% /var/adm/ras/livedump /dev/maintlv 524288 106840 80% 669 3% /maint 10.64.14.28:/Prod_FS/informix/informix 1104005048 320613120 71% 309039 1% /export/home1/informix 10.64.14.28:/Prod_FS/informix/db_maint 1104005048 320613120 71% 309039 1% /export/home1/db_maint /dev/infxlv 4194304 3165048 25% 302 1% /opt/informix I get this error even after setting IATEMPDIR to /export/home1/informix or /tmp or /opt/informix. IATEMPDIR cannot be the ONLY environment variable in your environment, it
looks like you chopped the export output! Try again and post the entire
output please. I'm looking for something specific!

We had this problem as well, it had to do with sym links. Do you perhaps have any symbolic links that deal with /opt? if so, the Informix installer may see that and be expecting /opt to have the minimum amount of space, even though you have ample space in your actual FS /dev/infxlv. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of DAN MUELLER Sent: Wednesday, August 07, 2013 7:46 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Install Issue [31061] Good Morning Folks, O/S = AIX 6.1 IDS = 11.70.FC7 I have an install issue that should be a no brainer however... Joe, No links but /opt/informix is a separate mount point than /opt if that makes a difference. Also this install is being performed via sudo. I could maybe see how that couold effect the IATEMPDIR env var however there is adequate space in the /tmp dir. Thanx, Dan We had this problem as well, it had to do with sym links. Dan:
This output is fine. Export should show all exported variables in
alphabetical order, env shows all variables defined in the environment (not
sorted) even if they are not exported. InstallAnywhere can only see
exported vars, so I was looking for that output. I can only assume that in
your environment only IATEMPDIR is exported for some reason.
Anyway, one thing I note is that INFORMIXDIR is not exported, not a big
deal since the installer will prompt you for this path anyway so that's
just an aside. However, what I was looking for is TEMP which you don't
have exported or even set so it is defaulting to "/".
There is a known bug in InstallAnywhere. Even if you set IATEMPDIR it
still checks the available space in $TEMP (& probably TMPDIR as well). Try
setting TEMP and TMPDIR to whatever you have IATEMPDIR set to and that
should resolve this.
Here's a link to an IBM APAR about this problem encountered installing
Tivoli which uses the same installer as Informix:

Art,
Thanx for taking me to school (-; but... I exported TEMP & TMPDIR (see below)
informix @ ibm733:/opt/informix>export
AUTHSTATE=compat
CLCMD_PASSTHRU=1
GSKIT_CLIENT_VERSION=7
HOME=/home/informix
IATEMPDIR=/export/home1/informix
INFORMIXDIR=/opt/informix/IDS_11.70.FC7LANG=C
LC__FASTMSG=true
LOCPATH=/usr/lib/nls/loc
LOGIN=informix
LOGNAME=informix
MAIL=/usr/spool/mail/informix
MAILMSG='[YOU HAVE NEW MAIL]'
NLSPATH=/usr/lib/nls/msg/%L/%N:/usr/lib/nls/msg/%L/%N.cat
ODMDIR=/etc/objrepos
PATH=/opt/informix/IDS_11.70.FC7/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/sbin:/usr/ucb:/usr/bin/X11:/sbin:/usr/java5/jre/bin:/usr/java5/bin:/usr/local/bin
PS1='informix @ ibm733:$PWD>'
PWD=/opt/informix
SHELL=/usr/bin/ksh
TEMP=/export/home1/informix
TERM=xterm
TMPDIR=/export/home1/informix
TZ=EST5EDT
USER=informix
_=/opt/informix/IDS_11.70.FC7/ids_install
_HOSTNAME=ibm733
I still get the same error from the install. I am installing via sudo so I
would thiunk that maybe ther env is not being carried forward through that
however "/" does have the amount of space the installer is asking for.
As soon as one of the sysadmins gets in, I am going to ask him to install as
root rather than sudo with IATEMPDIR. TEMP, & TMPDIR set however there is
still the problem of the amopunt of space actually being avainalbe that
installer is asking for.
And I DO appreciate your assistance here.
Thanx,
Dan
Two things: 1. use sudo -E to pick up the correct environment. 2. IAMTEMP does not work if pointing to a nfs mounted file system. The install will just hang. ( This occurred on 11.70.FC7 for me ).
Thanx Mark, I have used nfs mounted file systems before for the install but... And wouldn't you know it but the -E option is locked for us as well here. The original question re... the space however still exists. What the installer is asking for IS available. dan
I'm guessing you don't have "sudo su" privs. If installing as root with
the environment set up doesn't resolve the issue, I'd give up and call IBM.
Installation support is always available, even if your 'normal' Informix
support is coming through a 3rd party.

For any interested parties... There was something cached in /tmp that was holding a bunch of space that did not register in the df command. My SA simply grew the file system and all was well. I suspect now that a reboot would have accomplished the same. Thanx to all who replied though. Dan
