When, in the process of setting up a mirror of an existing chunk,
does =
it start writing to the mirror? As soon as the mirror is set up through =
onmonitor? When I bounce the engine? Is the database still available =
to users? I am running IDS 7.31 UD7 on AIX4.3.3. I plan on setting up =
a mirror for rootdbs, the log space, and a few critical dbspaces. I =
have read every book that I have and it is not quite clear.

Craig-
The process writes to the mirror drive as soon as you tell it to
start the mirror. The database remains usable by users, but will be
sluggish until the process completes. When the operation is finished
your new mirror dbspaces will be marked MI (output from onstat -d), this
means mirrored with inconsistencies. Run a level 0 backup (ontape or
onbar) to mark them MO (mirrored, online). You only need to bounce the
instance if you don't already have mirroring enabled in your onconfig.
