Sure. You can't use this type of device in the way you expect, unless it really can auto load the next tape. If you fill one tape and the auto loader loads another tape automatically, then you can use it with ontape. BUT, you must set your tape size to the TOTAL of all tapes in the device so that ontape sees it as one large tape.

It really can autoload the next tape , yes
I seem to recall not being able to set the Tape Size variable any larger
when I
was initially setting up the machine. is there maybe a maximum that this can
be set
to?
i will do as you suggest at lunch time at see what happens.
