Upgrading to a new version of Informix

Going through the document for 12.10 upgrade: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1304overview/index .html?ca=dat- I had a question regarding the section on new sql keywords. As with any release the database engine introduces a set of reserved keywords. The question I have regarding this is, does this applies only to the database objects? i.e. tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, etc. or this affects everything that transacts with the database engine as well, i.e. ad-hoc sql where I can define something like 'SELECT xyz AS <reserved_keyword> FROM table;'. or variable names in stored procedures. What is the extent of checking that needs to happen to ensure the current database is ready for upgrade? Thank you.
