Our 4gl applications send a data stream to pre-configured Intermec printers (thru the normal unix print queues.) We maintain a table of o/s parameters, specific to the platform, which is how we deal with the different types of printers, different print commands, and so forth. Some of the complicated pack tickets are handled with 4gl reports which include ascii init strings, escapes, hard-coded customer numbers and all kinds of ugly, very old code. What I mean by all this is that sure, we've had lots of success. Be of good cheer, drive on, do good. But don't ask to see our code--it's nasty and the company probably wouldn't let me post it anyway.
