Errors connecting to server - SQL -908; ISAM 115

Hi all, I wonder if someone can help me with this. One of the guys I work with has been moving databases from one server to another; thought he had it all set up right but got this error message when trying to connect: SQL statement error number -908. Attempt to connect to remote system failed. ISAM error number 115. ISAM error: cannot create lock file. He had this problem before with the same error messages but a different server - turned out there was a problem with sqlhosts, services and hosts files. This time, though, I can't see any problem with those files; everything matches neatly as it should. Any other suggestions?
