Set a rowcount limit

Is there anyway to use a command similar
to SET ROWCOUNT 10
in an sql statment.
example:
set rowcount 10
select * from bigtable
set rowcount 0
this would show just the first 10 records of a
big table.
Thanks for any ideas.

Depending on which verszion of the engine you are running. 7.3 came with a
nice little addition to the SQL language that allowed you to return x number
of rows from within a select statement.
I don't think this exists in the earlier versions.
It goes something like
SELECT FIRST 10 col1, col2, col3
FROM table;
