Informix 8.3, Sun solaris 2.6 I want to unload tables from database , compress them and backup to tapes(without writting to disk). I understand that there is mknod and mkpipe utility to achieve the task. Any experience on this? How to know the offset on the tape for every table?

As to how to find the table on tape, how about a separate file on the tape for each table. Then have the SP insert a record listing the session id (say start date/time) and order number for each table into a tracking table. Last thing the SP would do is output the current session's tracking table records to disk for safety. Art S. Kagel
